MTN-Qhubeka: Building for a future (Merhawi Kudus)

Eritrean Sport News: Getting Africa on bikes and winning the Tour de France.

MTN Qhubeka has been making headlines recently with a raft of new signings for the 2015 season. Since bringing on Brian Smith as the interim manager at the beginning of August, the team have announced no less than five WorldTour riders for next year’s roster, including Edvald Boasson Hagen, Tyler Farrar and Matt Goss.

The raft of big-name signings are designed to fit into the team’s main goal: Getting Africa on Bikes.

The Qhubeka charity has been giving bikes to the townships of Africa since 2005, handing out their 50,000th bike a week ago. The word Qhubeka is a Zulu word meaning to “move forward.” With that in mind, the team brought on Smith, who was given the job of securing eight (potentially nine, should sponsor negotiations work out) WorldTour riders and accelerating the development of the team and charity as a whole.

“The biggest thing is the Qhubeka charity, it’s all about the charity,” Smith told Cyclingnews. “We want to get Africans on bikes and make sure that they get a chance to race in Europe and potentially ride the Tour de France.”

Despite countries such as Eritrea where cycling is the national sport, the continent of Africa is woefully underrepresented in the upper echelons of the sport. Since 2007, the team has been developing African talent. They made the move to Professional Continental last season, before finally making their Grand Tour debut at this year’s Vuelta a España.

Making the Tour de France

The Vuelta a España was good for the team, with all nine riders – including six Grand Tour debutants – finishing. However the team makes no bones about their big goal: getting into the Tour de France. It provides a platform, far more than any other race, to spread their message.

“I think we can move quicker and get the charity brand out there quicker if we get to the Tour de France,” Smith explains. “It’s the biggest race in the world and it gets 10 times more publicity than other bike race. With the Qhubeka charity and the brand awareness then hopefully there will be more money put into the charity pot.”

Moving up to Professional Continental status, opened up a new world for MTN-Qhubeka, but it is a difficult one to compete in. With so many teams fighting for the few wild card spots in the Grand Tours, the South African outfit has to try and stand out from the crowd. To do that, they need victories. That is where the new signings come into the picture. Smith says that cost meant that top GC contenders and pure sprinters were out of the question, while youth development is restricted to the African riders.

In addition to Goss, Farrar and Boasson Hagen, the team has also taken on Theo Bos and former Qhubeka rider Reinardt Janse van Rensburg, with an announcement regarding Stephen Cummings expected soon. Between them, the six riders have won 11 stages over all of three Grand Tours. And while Bos has struggled to transfer his talents to the road, he has five world titles on the track. Smith hopes that they can find that form in the early part of the 2015 season, a crucial time for any wildcard hopefuls.

Returning to former glories

Thus far, MTN-Qhubeka has been a team with two goals in life: improving the lives of everyday Africans by giving out bicycles and nurturing the first African-registered Tour de France champion. However, to bring the success that they need they must jump-start the stagnating careers of their new signings, something Smith believes the team can do.

“We’ve got guys that can win and guys that have delivered. A leopard doesn’t change its spots and I believe they can do it again. The teams that they are with, I don’t think have helped to motivate these riders. They’re in a position that they’re unhappy with,” said Smith.

By giving them a little more freedom and rethinking where their goals lie, Smith thinks he can return the riders to their former glories.

“We want to race the way these guys want to race instead of a controlled fashion. I think that’s essential, because riders want to race how they want to race and if you restrict that then that’s what de-motivates them,” he explained.

“I believe that Bos has the power for something like Paris-Roubaix. Boasson Hagen, is he Flanders and Roubaix or is he more a Liège-Bastogne-Liège guy? I think he is more (suited to) Liège-Bastogne-Liège. If they help each other then I believe they can win some very big races.”

Out of Africa

The big names riders have been brought in to move things along at a quicker pace but in the collection of riders that they already have, MTN-Qhubeka believes it has some of the most promising talent in the peloton.

Two names that crop up again and again are Merhawi Kudus and Louis Meintjes. Both completed the Vuelta a España earlier this month and, at 20 and 22 respectively, that is no mean feat.

Reigning South African champion, Meintjes even infiltrated the break on stage 14. He was dropped towards the end, but still forged on to finish fifth. Kudus comes from the cycling-mad country of Eritrea and, along with compatriot Natnael Berhane, is seen as a true contender for the Tour de France title in the future.

It is in these riders and their African teammates where the future of this team lies, but the new signings will be there to give them a helping hand.

by UNDP,
Eritrean News: Eritrea has achieved impressive progress on health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), members of the United Nations and the Government observed here in an event organized during the UN General Assembly.

The discussion was hosted by the Permanent Mission of Eritrea to the United Nations, the UN Resident Coordinator in Asmara, Christine Umutoni, with the Foreign Minister of Eritrea, Osman Saleh and Yoka Brandt, the Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF as keynote speakers.

In more than twenty years since independence, the Eastern African country reduced child mortality by two thirds, decreased the maternal mortality ratio from 1,700 to 380 per 100,000 live births, and maintained exceptionally low HIV and tuberculosis prevalence rates.

Around 98 percent of all children are now immunized, as compared with 14 percent only at independence.

“Eritrea has emerged from 30 years of a devastating war, with non-existing infrastructural, institutional and human resources capacity,” said Osman Saleh. “It has been able to make real progress in all areas of social, economic and political development,” he added.

Eritrea’s concerted efforts, bold policies and considerable investments are considered responsible for the dramatic changes in the health sector.

“What we see as development partners, what is responsible for this success is community participation, the enabling environment, leadership, strong mechanisms for prevention, value for money and coordinated inter-sectoral approaches,” said Christine Umutoni.

She added that community and women’s involvement were key to tackling health challenges.

Ms. Umutoni also pointed out that the country has put into place a number of innovations to accelerate change. These include temporary maternal clinics, mobile medical units, as well as knowledge of migration patterns and remote areas.

Generating statistics, sustaining funding, partnerships with the private sector and human resource capacity were identified as priorities.

Participants agreed that success on MDGs 4,5 and 6 should serve as lessons for all other goals and targets, and inform priorities for the post-2015 development agenda in Eritrea.

Keynote addresses were followed by technical presentations by Abraham Kidane, Economic Advisor to the Ministry of Development, and Usman Abdulmumini, WHO representative in Eritrea.

History About The People Of Eritrea

by Erina,

Eritrean History:

Eritrea is a country of nine nationalities. They belong to Nilo-Saharan, Kushitic, and Semitic families. The earliest inhabitants of Eritrea were Pygmoid type of people. The Nilo-Saharan family (Nilotic) were the first migrants to Eritrea. They migrated to Eritrea from Upper Nile. They intermarried with the Pygmoid population. This resulted in Nara and Kunama ethnic groups.

Kingdom of Kush Ethnic

Kingdom of Kush Ethnic

During 2000 BC Kushites migrated to Eritrea from North Africa. They intermarried with the earlier inhabitants. These are represented by the Beja (Ben Amir and Hidareb), Bilen, Afar and Saho. The latest migrants were the Semitic people (1000BC-700 BC). They came across the Red Sea from the firtile agricultural highlands of the Arabian Peninsula. First they settled on the coastal areas. But they found the coastal areas to be hot and arid compared to their original land. So they encroached into the cooler and fertile highlands of Eritrea. Therefore the Eritrean people can be grouped into three. These are: Nilotic group-Nara and Kunama, Kushitic group-Saho, Afar, Bilen, Beja (Ben Amir and Hidareb, and the Semitic group, Tigre, Tigrigna and Rashaida.

Eritrea - Tigrinya Ethnic Group

The Semitic group had an immense influence on military, political, economic and social cultural life in the Eritrean society. They introduced domestic animals (camels, horses, sheep), irrigation farming, new agricultural seeds, construction of houses, handcraft (pottery, woodwork, weaving), writing, trade, and mining. Moreover, people started to organize themselves to live together in villages under one chief. The villages evolved into city-states. This is how the Axumite Kingdom emerged.

What would happen to Hailemedhin, if he would hijack Eritrean Airlines

What would happen if Hailemedhin would hijack Eritrean instead of Ethiopian Airlines

Eritrean News: Let me guess he would be recognized as an Asylum Seeker without charge from the court, he would maybe get the nobel peace prize or would become a speaker in famous NGO’s for Human rights. The whole world would talk how bad the situation for human beens are in Eritrea. They would talk about football teams and athletes which flee the country “Eritrea”, but not about Zerisenay Tadese the world record holder in half marathon or all positive role model for example in cycling. For example Natnael Berhane, Daniel Teklehaymanot, Merhawi Kudus and all other professional cyclist which represents the country in a positive way. It is so hard to find positive things about Eritrea in the world “Mass Media” except on pro government sites.

But if you are “Ethiopian citizen” and tell the world how bad your country is, than you will be arrested and send back to Ethiopia. 😉

So the easiest way for Ethiopians is to say they are Eritrean to get Asylum in Europe.

African News: By Elias Meseret, “DireTube” Correspondent

The Federal High Court’s 20th Criminal Bench has found the co-pilot of an Ethiopian Airlines aircraft that was forced to land in Switzerland on February 17, 2014 guilty. Hailemedhin Abera, who forced an Ethiopian Airlines scheduled flight to Rome to be diverted to Genève, was charged with two cases but was found guilty on one instance.

Though he was also charged with causing the aircraft to agitate and cause the aircraft to shake terribly thereby causing problem to the passengers’ onboard, he was only found guilty of hijacking. Even though family members said at the time that the co-pilot was distraught at the time with a death in a family member, he had used a rope to lower himself out of a window and then asked for a political asylum in Switzerland.

He has since been in detention in Switzerland after Ethiopia’s call for extradition was rejected by Swiss authorities.

Hailemedhin, who had worked for Ethiopian Airlines for five years, locked the pilot of a Rome-bound flight out of the cockpit and then he diverted the plane to Geneva.

The jetliner carrying 200 passengers and crew took off from the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, on a flight to Milan and then Rome, but sent a distress message over Sudan that it had been hijacked, an Ethiopian official said at the time. Once the plane was over Europe, two Italian fighter jets and later French jets were scrambled to accompany it.

The court said the sentencing of Hailemedhin will be announced on March 20.

Eritrean News: (Amharic language video News) A 16-year-old Eritrean migrant who escaped captivity under ISIS in Libya

Nael Goitom, 16, fled IS captivity along with four other Eritreans minors on 7 April after the extremists decided to move their Libyan camp in the desert to hide from the fighting in the area.

“We thought: it’s better to try to escape than to wait to be slaughtered by them,” he told IBTimes UK in an interview. They walked for four days before reaching a settled area and asking for help.

Under more than a month of IS captivity, the Christian boys were forced to learn the Koran to become “Cubs of the Caliphate”. “They asked us ‘what do you choose, to be killed or to become Muslims?’ Of course we choose the latter. ‘We’ll fight for you’, we said,” Nael said.
